What a new wireless generation actually changes at home

Each certification cycle brings a larger headline number. For most households the meaningful gains are in congestion handling, not peak throughput.

A new generation of wireless equipment is announced with a peak figure, and the peak figure is the least relevant number on the box for an ordinary household. It describes a laboratory maximum achieved with an ideal client, at close range, with the full width of a band available and nothing else competing for it. Very few homes resemble that laboratory.

Where the real improvements sit

The improvements that a household notices are usually about coordination. Newer generations schedule airtime among many devices more efficiently, recover from interference more gracefully, and let a device use more than one band at once so that a brief problem on one does not stall a call. In a flat with thirty connected devices, that scheduling work matters far more than a higher ceiling.

The upgrade only counts on both ends

A wireless connection negotiates down to the older of the two devices involved. A current-generation access point talking to a five-year-old laptop produces a five-year-old connection. This is the single most common reason an upgrade feels like it did nothing: the equipment changed, the fleet of devices in the house did not.

It is also worth being clear about the ceiling above the ceiling. No wireless upgrade can deliver more than the service arriving at the building. If the line supplies a given rate, a faster access point redistributes that rate more evenly. It does not manufacture more of it.
