How we source, review and correct our work

We prefer primary sources: published technical standards, certification documentation from standards bodies, regulator rules and consumer notices, official filings and permitting records, and our own observation and measurement. Where an article rests on a particular document, we name it in the “what informed this article” section at the foot of the piece.

We do not present a vendor claim as a finding. Where a figure comes from a manufacturer or operator, we say so and describe the conditions under which it was produced.

Explainers and guides that a reader may act on are reviewed by a second member of the desk before publication. Where a review has taken place, the reviewer is named at the top of the article. Review checks that claims are supported, that instructions are safe and lawful, and that language is plain.

We correct errors of fact promptly and visibly. A substantive correction is noted on the article itself rather than made silently. If guidance has been overtaken by a change in standards or rules, we update the article and record the update date.

Editorial decisions are made by the desk alone. No advertiser, sponsor, provider or manufacturer sees an article before publication, and no commercial arrangement can require, alter, delay or withdraw coverage. Editorial staff do not accept payment, gifts, hospitality or other consideration in exchange for coverage, placement or wording.

Any commercial content is labelled unambiguously as such and is kept visually distinct from editorial. We do not publish paid articles under an editorial byline, and we do not accept links placed for search purposes.

• Instructions for accessing, monitoring or interfering with a network you are not responsible for.
• Guidance for circumventing paid services, authentication or access controls.
• Promises of savings, earnings, speeds or outcomes that we cannot substantiate.
• Claims about health effects of wireless equipment, which fall outside our expertise.
• Content that identifies or targets an individual, or that presents an unverified allegation as fact.

Automated tools may assist with research, transcription and copy checking. They do not write our articles unattended and they do not publish anything. A named member of the desk is responsible for the accuracy of every article that carries their byline.

Photographs are credited in the caption. Where an image is illustrative rather than documentary evidence of the specific subject, the caption says so. We do not alter photographs in ways that change what they depict.
